BACKGROUND: We evaluated the association between smoking status and thyroid cancer risk and whether this association is mediated by body mass index (BMI) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). METHODS: We performed a cohort study of 96,855 Korean adults who were followed annually or biennially for a median of 5.9 years. RESULTS: During 511,052.9 person-years of follow-up, 1,250 participants developed thyroid cancer.
